ulu

2014

Acrylic, photography & digital editing.

These works were created using an ulu—a knife traditionally used by Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut women. In folklore, the knife is a visionary tool, cutting through illusion to reveal what is hidden. Reframed in a contemporary context, the ulu becomes a symbol of feminine insight: the willingness to cut away the superfluous, to make decisive endings, and to carve new beginnings. Its use embodies resilience and agency—the power to rise from failure, ignite passion, and, when necessary, reduce something to ashes in order to create anew.
